Rudy Baylor was a lawyer who luckily had a job in a firm called Brodnax and Speer.To his disappointment,he lost his first job when Brodnax and Speer had been bought by Tinley Britt even before he started.As a result,he had no job and no money .However,he did had a case which may be a good one.It was about the poor family fighted against a big insurance company.Buddy Black and his wife,Dot,had two sons,Donny Ray and Ron,who were identical twins.Buddy and Dot had started a medical policy when their sons had been seventeen.Unfortunately,Donny Ray got leukemia. Even though they hadn’t missed a payment, Great Benefit refused to pay for a bone marrow transplant.So Donny Ray was dying.In fact,the insurance company was supposed to pay the cost of transplant.It was because bone marrow transplants were routine treatment. Though he didn’t have a license,Rudy still wanted to do everything that he could for the Blacks.Though he didn’t have any experience,he still wanted to handle the case for them.Dot and Rudy decided to sue for millions.However,there was no greedy bone in this woman’s body.She just wanted her son to become healthy.Rudy also got a job to be an assistant in the Lake firm.He could work on the Black’s case without receiving any of the fee but he was satisfied with it.He went to the Blacks’ house to see them and get the contract sign by Donny Ray and his parents.It was the first time he met Donny Ray who was definitely close to death. Rudy got the phone call from Dot who had been called from Mr.Barry Lancaster.Dot said that Barry had told her he was her lawyer and Rudy left the firm.Rudy became angry but he wasn’t allowed to talk to Jonathan Lake,the owner of the Lake firm.To his surprise,there was two policemen to visit him.They asked him some questions about the last night he had been to Lake’s office.Finally,he knew somebody had set fire to the office and he was the main suspect who had been to the office angrily.To help Rudy,Prince,one of Rudy’s friends,introduced him to the lawyer,Bruiser Stone,who was Prince’s best friend and would hire Rudy to be one of his lawyers.Rudy told him the Blacks’ case and how Barry Lancaster had used him so that he could steal the case.Bruiser gave him some useful advice,for example,they had to file suit more quickly than Lancasster who owed the case technically.Rudy also persuaded the Blacks to sign a letter firing Barry and the new contract with the firm of J.Lyman Stone. Deck Shifflet help Rudy to get the case about the car accident which Bruiser asked him to get.He taught Rudy how to make the guy who had gotten hurt be his client. When Rudy was alone in the café in the hospital where he had met his first client gotten hurt in car accident,he met Kelly who was young and pretty.She had been struck by her drunk husband,Cliff Riker,with a baseball bat.Rudy advised her to file for divorce.She wanted to do it as well;however,Cliff had threatened her to kill her if she hadn’t stop it.Finally,Kelly left the hospital and asked him not to try to find her. It was difficult for Rudy to concentrate his attention on studying for the bar exam because he was falling in love with a married woman,Kelly.Bruiser told him Tinely Britty represented Great benefit and Leo F. Drummond was the lead lawyer who rarely lost.The judge would be Harvey hale,an old friend of Drummond.Fortunately,a month after taking the bar exam,Rudy got the letter telling him he had already passed the bar.At the same time,he and Deck found Bruiser was very strange.Deck said Bruiser was in big trouble,they should get out and they could start their own business.They went to the courtroom without Bruiser.Rudy would handle the Blacks’ case but he hadn’t receive his license.When Harvey left the room,Drummeond said Great Benefit had instructed him to offer Rudy and the Blacks seventy-five thousand to settle the case.Back to the office,Rudy and Deck found Bruiser had gone.To find him out,Rudy called Prince but he had gone as well. To tell Dot what had happened when he and Deck went to the court,Rudy visited Dot again.They thought Great Benefit wanted to shut them up with seventy-five thousand dollars.They asked to Donny Ray whether to settle the fight.He wanted to settle so that the money could help his parents do many things.However,Rudy wouldn’t like to do it,he wanted everyone to know what Great Benefit had done.Because Harvey dead suddenly,TyroneKipler was appointed to instead of him.Donny Ray was too weak to leave the house to give his statement in Rudy and Deck’s new office.So everyone went to his house.Donny Ray answered the questions with a polite and sickly.After Donny Ray’s statement,Rudy visited Dr.Walter.He asked Rudy to pay five hundred dollars an hour for testifying. Next it was Dot’s turn to give her statement.She gave Drummond the letter which made her very much.It was the letter from the head of the claims department who had attacked Dot with the words which meant she must be so stupid that he had to deny her claim for eight times. After picking the jury,everyone waited for a verdict.Finally,the jury reached the verdict.They decided to punish Great Benefit for refusing to pay for the bone marrow transplant.They ordered that Great Benefit pay two hundred thousand dollars in actual damages and punitive damages of fifty million dollars.However,Dot would give every penny she got to the American Leukemia Society.Like what he said to Dot before,Rudy took a third of whatever they got,sixteen and a half million dollars.
